A cyclist in South Africa found dead next to his bike in a game reserve is believed to have been trampled to death by a giraffe, according to police.

45 year-old Braam Bosse was staying at the Thaba Monate Lodge near Bela Bela in Limpopo province with his family but went missing after going for a bike ride alone on Sunday afternoon. His body was discovered in an area densely populated by giraffes by another group of visitors out walking.

Colonel Ronel Otto, from the South African Police Service, said post-mortem examination would be conducted on Tuesday. “It is suspected that he was killed by a giraffe,” she told The Telegraph. “They look at the specific injuries that he had, it looks like he was basically trampled.”

In September 2013, a giraffe was caught on camera harassing two cyclists it encountered in Groenkloof Nature Reserve in Pretoria.
