Team Sky’s Gianni Moscon has fractured his scaphoid, a small bone in his wrist, in an accident while training in the gym last week.

“I was doing exercises and fell back,” Moscon told La Gazzetta dello Sport. “Very stupid. Usually, nothing happens with an accident like that but then I had a bump that started swelling and hurting more.”

Moscon underwent surgery during the week to repair the fracture and he hopes to return to training on the bike within four weeks.

The 23 year-old had a number of controversial episodes during the 2017 season. During the Tour de Romandie, Moscon racially abused FDJ rider Kevin Reza and he was suspended from racing by Team Sky for six weeks. In October, he was involved in a crash with Sebastien Reichenbach, also of FDJ, during the Tre Valli Varesine. The Swiss rider fractured an elbow and accused Moscon of having caused the crash.

Moscon also won the Italian Time-Trial Championships and finished 3rd at the Giro di Lombardia and 5th at Paris–Roubaix during an eventful year.
