The long-awaited first indoor velodrome in Ireland has taken a step closer to coming to fruition after Sport Ireland revealed last week that the contract for development has now been put out to tender.

The velodrome will form part of the National Velodrome & Badminton Centre at the National Sports Campus in Abbotstown, Dublin. It’s planned that it will be built to international standards (e.g,, technical specifications issued by the Union Cycliste Internationale and the Badminton World Federation).

In 2014, the then Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport, Leo Varadkar put funding in place for the project to reach planning and design stage.

The project then took a further step forward when Fingal County Council granted planning permission last year. Sport Ireland are now waiting for the estimated cost of construction before seeking additional funding.

Cooney Architects had been appointed the project architects and if funding is approved, then the project is expected to take 18 months to complete.
