Fabio Felline has been diagnosed with a fractured skull and broken nose following his crash at Amstel Gold today. The Trek-Segafredo rider crashed in the neutral zone.

Felline somersaulted over his handlebars as the peloton rolled out from the start, and his team later confirmed that the Italian rider had been trying to remove a piece of glass from his tyre, causing his front wheel to lock up.

He was unable to start the race and was taken to hospital instead. It was initially suspected that he had suffered a broken nose and facial injuries.

His team have since provided an update on his condition.

“Fabio crashed with his face directly into the ground,” explained team physician Jens Hinder. “He sustained a broken nose and cuts to his face and the radiologists also found a fracture at the base of the skull. He needs further examination to determine if it is stable or unstable and this will determine what treatment is required for recovery. It is too early to know until he undergoes further tests.”

“The recovery time from a skull fracture will be determined after Felline undergoes further examination and the team will send updates on his status when it is known.”

“Felline will be sidelined for the Ardennes Classics, unfortunate news after he had recently returned to top form after a lengthy battle fighting a virus.”
