With just one day until the start of the Giro d’Italia, Fabian Cancellara (Trek-Segafredo) has fallen ill. The Swiss rider has a fever and stomach problems.

The Giro starts tomorrow in Apeldoorn in the Netherlands with a 9.8-kilometre prologue and Cancellara had been targeting the win which would mean he would wear the pink jersey for the first time in his career.

Prior to the season start, Cancellara had said that wearing the pink jersey was one of his goals for the season.

“I’ve never worn pink and I still need it. It’s a goal for my last season,” he said. “The yellow jersey in the Tour is the most prestigious, but perhaps the maglia rosa is the one with the most passion, the most emotion.”

He has decided to rest up today in bid to recover, but he still remains optimistic as he tweeted the following message:

“Bad luck hit me yesterday after training, stomach flu/Fever put me in bed. Full rest today and stay positive for tomorrow”
