Despite being in the closing kilometres of his first ever monument victory at the Tour of Flanders last weekend and with Fabian Cancellara and Sep Vanmarcke chasing hard behind, Peter Sagan still found time to give an Eddy Merckx lookalike a shout-out.
With just over three kilometres remaining of the race, Sagan spotted the cyclist in the retro Molteni jersey on the adjacent bike path and shouted “Eddy” at him.
The man was quite likely to have been Frans Geldof, the eccentric Belgian who turns up at many races dressed up as Eddy Merckx. This was an article that we previously published about Geldof – “The man who thinks he’s Eddy Merckx”
Sagan confirmed to Belgian cycling journalist Karl Vannieuwkerke of Extra Time Koers during the week that he had given Geldof a shout of “Eddy” as he passed.
