Eddie Dunbar has been unable to start today’s UEC European U23 Road Championships Road Race due to injury, Cycling Ireland have announced.

Michael O’Loughlin, Daire Feeley, Darragh O’Mahony and Matthew Teggart are the four riders who will take to the start line in Herning this morning for eight laps of a 20-kilometre circuit in Herning, Denmark.

It has been a week of mixed emotions for 20 year-old Dunbar from Banteer, Co. Cork who earlier this week was announced as a new signing for 2018 for the Aqua Blue Sport team.

Dunbar could have been expected to have been in the mix in today’s race after a stellar season. In April, he took the biggest victory of his career when he soloed to the win at the Ronde van Vlaanderen Beloften. He also finished 2nd overall at Triptyque des Monts et Châteaux, 5th at both Volta ao Alentejo and Clasica de Arrabida.

Following on from Flanders, the 20 year-old took an impressive third at Trofeo Città di San Vendemiano. In 2016, he finished in the top-10 at both the U23 World Championships time-trial and the UEC Road European Championships U23 time-trial in addition to winning a stage of An Post Rás.
