Eddie Dunbar has confirmed that he will move to Axeon Cycling for the 2016 season. The Cork rider confirmed the news this evening.

Dunbar tweeted: “Delighted to confirm that I will be joining @axeoncycling for 2016! Looking forward to an exciting year ahead.”

Dunbar spent his first year in the professional ranks with the British team NFTO, where he put in some impressive performances including long-range attacks at both the European and World Championships.

The U.S. team are managed by Axel Merckx and Dunbar caught the attention of Merckx’s father Eddy earlier in the season. Merckx senior introduced himself after La Côte Picarde in April after Dunbar had spent over 100 kilometres in a break.

Amongst others contracted to ride for the team next season are British rider Tao Geoghegan Hart and American rider Colin Joyce. The Continental team rode all of the top U.S. races this season including the Tours of California and Utah. Other races on their schedule included the Volta ao Alentejo and the Tour of Alberta.

The team have proved successful in helping riders get up to World Tour level. Amongst the World Tour riders who have raced for Axeon in the past are Taylor Phinney, Alex Dowsett, Joe Dombrowski, Ian Boswell and George Bennett. Hopefully, the move will prove as successful for Dunbar.
