Eddie Dunbar finished 26th in the Elite Men’s Time Trial at the UCI Road World Championships in Yorkshire this afternoon and afterwards expressed satisfaction with his performance in his debut at the Elite event. Dunbar set a time that saw him in the hot seat before he was overtaken by British rider John Archibald,

Dunbar’s time of 1:09:52 was 4 minutes 46 seconds behind the winner, Rohan Dennis of Australia. 19 year-old Remco Evenepoel of Belgium took silver with Filippo Ganna of Italy taking the bronze medal. Dunbar’s fellow Irishman, Ryan Mullan, finished in a time of 1:10:21, good enough for 32nd position.

Commenting after the race Dunbar said: “Overall the performance was good. It was a consistent effort and I was happy with it. The crowds were incredible today. A lot of Irish fans out there and in the middle of Yorkshire where you wouldn’t expect them.”

“I’m looking forward to the road race on Sunday. We have a really strong team, six really motivated guys and I think we can do something on Sunday and dream about the rainbows (jersey) for someone.”

Dunbar and Mullen will be joined by Sam Bennett, Dan Martin, Conor Dunne and Rory Townsend on the Irish team for the Elite Men’s Road Race. The race will start at 8:40am on Sunday and take riders 285 kilometres from Leeds to Harrogate, finishing with a 7-lap circuit.
