Dutch police have decided not to protest at Sunday’s stage of the Tour de France over a pay dispute. Their original plan for protesting on that stage from Rotterdam to Zeeland, was to stop the publicity caravan that precedes the race, at a traffic checkpoint. This would have resulted in the cyclists also having to stop.

Instead, unions representing the police have decided to make a visible presence as the riders depart from Rotterdam. They also intend to hang banners from the Erasmus bridge in the city.

Talks were held between police unions and Rotterdam city council officials and a compromise was reached. Police unions are looking for a 3.3% pay increase which would end a four-year pay freeze, in addition to a number of other changes in conditions.
