Dutch athletes and volunteers working at the Rio Olympics are overcoming the heavy traffic congestion in the city by using specially commissioned bicycles.

Dutch brewery Heineken, in partnership with bike manufacturers Gazelle have built and shipped over 250 orange-coloured CityZen C7 bikes for use by athletes, volunteers working at Holland Heineken House and members of the Dutch Olympic committee.

Traffic congestion is bad at normal times in the Brazilian city but is especially bad with the Olympics taking place there now. A number of lanes within the city have been designated for Olympic traffic only, adding to the commuting times for locals.

“We want to create an environment where the athletes feel at home and can focus entirely on the performance,” said a spokesperson from Gazelle.
