Cycling Ireland have announced that disc brakes are now forbidden in Cycling Ireland sanctioned competitive road events.

The news follows on from the banning of the use of disc brakes by the UCI in road races and also in some of high-profile cyclosportives such as L’Etape du Tour, La Marmotte, and L’Ariegeoise.

In April, the use of disc brakes in road races made headline news when Francesco Ventoso claimed his leg injury sustained in Paris-Roubaix had arisen from contact with another bike with disc brakes.

  1. After crashing in a race in the 70’s i was left with a large scar (still there) on the back of my head, caused by a traditional caliper brake!! and what about all the other sharp bits on a bike? x11 sprockets, and chainrings? i’ve witnessed some nasty injuries from these over the years.
