Team Sky’s Owain Doull has claimed that a disc brake sliced through his shoe and cut his foot after a crash on today’s opening stage of the Abu Dhabi Tour.
The Welsh rider was one of a number of riders including Marcel Kittel (Quick Step Floors), Caleb Ewan (Orica-Scott) and Alex Dowsett (Movistar) to crash near the end of the stage and later posted a photo of his shoe which had been sliced through.
Doull felt that the cut had been caused by the disc brake of German sprinter Kittel.
He posted on Twitter afterwards: “Not the start I wanted but an improvement on last time, I made it to the start line this time. Lost a bit of skin but I’m all good”
“Although fortunately for me the disk brake went through my shoe and not my leg. Disk cut straight through my shoe into my foot” He then followed up with the tweet: “Sort it out @UCI_cycling.”
I know there’s often less of a bunch… But this never happens in CX or XC racing.
So no the first time this happened in a road race. So definitely a different race to CX
Personally I don’t think discs should be allowed in road racing. They’re not necessary and have obvious dangers in crash. Speeds in cx are noticeably slower and less of a bunch as you say. Also they very much have an advantage in all that mud.
CX is a totally different animal to road racing. Slipstream riding is almost nonexistant and unnecessary, whereas it is foundational in road riding.
Hhmmm, needs steel toecaps on these – Elf n safety mate, innit
Seriously – Lucky lad!
They should fit “guards”, shocking 😉
#chainring
Uh huh, chain crud stain…
Looks like too fine a cut for a chainring. But how his foot got to that position is beyond me. Must have been quite a tangle!
Donald Stevenson
Discs are rounded off now, no way it cut his shoe
Yeah I’m with you on that. Also the alignment of perforations with cut tells another story. Broken spoke? Who knows
Chain usually covers the chainring. Probably went up the back of him and straddled the other bike. A disc doesn’t need to be sharpened when it’s heated up to cut through something soft.
Kittel and his team were more dangerous than the disc brakes
If his foot was that close to get cut in the middle of his shoe, half of his foot would have been in the spokes (from the angle of the cut) & there is no apparent rubbing from the spokes on his shoe!
It’s also a left shoe to a left sided disc….
not a chain ring. beyond the split a single line no teath
Bullshit. I know riders get tangled up in crashes but how does his left foot get caught up on a disc that is on the LEFT of someone else’s bike. Seems like an ulterior motive here. I’m sure this kind of stuff has happened before but now they have something they can point their finger at. An agenda. Especially with the “sort it out UCI comment” at the end.
Owain be like.
Have you seen the distance between a rotor and the spokes? Seems unlikely to me that a rotor would be capable of cutting a shoe right in the middle.
Matthew Krolak mechanically plausible?
The rotor is on the left side, and the cut is also on the left side? How does that work? It would make more sense if it was on his right shoe
Eddie McGrann
Who? Oh yeah, now people will know his name. Well done Owain.
Images below make Doull’s explanation seem a bit implausible.
I think the stain on his shoe is rust from the fence.
Pure unadulterated horse shit
Rusty drag mark with a cut in the middle. Clearly not from a disc.
Highly improbable it was Kittel’s disc. More likely the fencing he hit that split his shoe. Extremely difficult to cut a left shoe with a left-side disc. Couple that with the fact rotors aren’t sharp, very unlikely they could cut through leather!
Bullshit. I’ve ridden/raced mountain bikes for years. All with disc brakes…..every mtb rider under the sun wonders what the hell is going on with this…….never seen incidents or injuries caused by disc brakes.
Bladed spoke not bloody disc watch the slow-mo video.

Anyone see all this moaning in other cycling sports?
