The Belgian pair Moreno de Pauw and Kenny de Ketele took their second consecutive Six Day London title after denying home favourites Bradley Wiggins and Mark Cavendish the victory.

De Pauw and De Ketele had led the competition from midway through the second day until midway through the fifth. However, Wiggins and Cavendish took the lead on the penultimate night of racing.

The Belgians overhauled their illustrious British rivals with a lap in the closing stages of the final Madison chase, and took the sprint to the line to take the victory on points.

The two said that this win was their greatest in Six Day racing to date and have targeted more of the same in the coming months.

The Belgian pair took to Twitter to express their delight as De Pauw tweeted afterwards: “Can someone wake me up?! Still can’t believe we just won the @sixdaycycling for the 2nd time in a row! Thank you London for the support!!” whilst his team-mate tweeted: “I will never forget this day! Absolutely amazing! Thank you everyone for the support and the messages! See you all in Gent! Time for a beer”
