Team Sky’s Danny van Poppel showed some incredible skill by managing to stay upright on the final corner of today’s fourth stage of the Tour de Suisse from Rheinfelden to Champagne.
The Dutch rider was in fourth position going into the final corner when he went wide and just about managed to avoid crashing. Van Poppel came close to clipping the barriers and if he had fallen, it could have resulted in a bunch spill.
The final corner was positioned just 150 metres from the finish and it was always going to be a fight to get into the corner in first position.
Maximiliano Richeze of Etixx – Quick Step was first into the corner ahead of Fernando Gaviria and race leader Peter Sagan (Tinkoff) and that was the order as they crossed the line.

good recovery, but FFS tight corner looking to go on the inside of sagan
I agree Nice comment thanks so much
Should be riding for Bellvue Speedway. Amazing skill.
He lost it just before the corner, great skill to stay up!
Thanks big fan here
His back wheel goes a foot in the air, like a *ucking bronco, as he’s enterring the corner, that’s amazing control, or the regaining of!!
Another way of looking at this is, 3 riders took the turn flawlessly, while the 4th (Poppel) ran wide and clipped the barriers, and then soft pedaled to the finish losing many places.
Another perspective is that, of the first 4 riders, only Poppel drifted too wide and clipped the barriers, then soft pedaled to the finish losing many places. Good recovery yes, but poor bike handling skills to have to be in recovery mode in the first place…
Can’t believe he got relegated for it.
