A cyclist in the UK has posted a video on YouTube showing an incredibly close pass by a van which he has described as a “lunatic punishment pass.”

The footage of the incident which took place yesterday was posted by YouTube user Bike-Riding Motorist and shows a white Citroen van overtaking the cyclist with just inches to spare.

In the comments section of the video, the cyclist also states: “Note, this road has a 30mph speed limit.” In the video, the cyclist indicates that the overtaking distance was just 0.2 metres and also states that “the following van driver showed how much space was available.”

It’s not clear where the incident took place, but the title of the video includes @GMPTraffic and @GMCycling suggesting the incident occurred in Greater Manchester.

  1. Unfortunately in Italy it is usual to see these scenes. We have a lot of tight roads, but this is not a sufficient reason…One big problem is the use of mobile phones (calls or worse messages with whatsap or socials) during driving, even if this is forbidden and subjected to heavy sanctions. The culture of respect must be teached and shared much more.

  2. and the police will………do nothing as per usual in my experience.
Yes, had passes as close as that, also had passes that close with passenger hanging out with an air horn…police response was “were there any other witnesses?” ffs.

  3. I ride a lot and would never – unless I was desperate – take a road like that. Not to suggest that the van driver was an innocent; he was clearly trying to punish the cyclist, yet we need to be mindful about the roads we take. That 1 is definitely a death-trap.

  4. Hit by a driver in London during March. Not concentrating just drove straight into my jnee. Two weeks on critches for me and a couple of weeks of physio. For him: an afternoon at a “Driver Awareness Training “. Big deterrent?

  5. It seems some clarification is needed regarding the calibration on the still at the end. The 0.2m point is 0.2m to the right of my handlebar end, or 0.5m right of my front tyre. The outside of the van tyre was, therefore, about 0.3m to the right of my bar end and my shoulder. I’m not sure exactly how far the door mirror sticks out beyond the tyre, but it was probably no more than a couple of centimetres from my shoulder.
