German rider Arnold Fiek has survived an incredible crash during yesterday’s GP Lugano when he crashed against a railing and flew 12 metres down a cliff face into Lake Lugano.

Fiek fractured his pelvis, but managed to swim to the edge of the lake to await rescue. His Christina Watches team posted a photo of the rider awaiting rescue after his fall with the following message:

“Today our thoughts are with Arnold Fiek. @arnoldulm’s #GPLugano quickly came to an end due to a thrilling crash caused by slippery road conditions. He missed a right turn, crashed against a bridge railing; flies 12 meters over a cliff covered by rocks and ended up in the lake of Lugano.”

“Arnold has been recovered by the organization’s rescue boat and was taken to the hospital. It’s hard to believe but he has never been unconscious, except a wet kit and an extraordinary story. We all wish him a speedy recovery!! 🍀 #procycling”

Fiek subsequently posted the following message on Instagram:

“Today was really not my day. After departure underestimated a curve and crashed with full balancing against a shut-off. A few seconds later I found myself in Lugano Lake.”

“With my last strength I’m made it to the small brick wall, which was responsible for my pelvic hairline crack. Blessing in disguise. A few weeks and it goes on. Thank you for all which have helped me and thought of me!”
