Kajsa Tylen, a Swedish-born cyclist living in the U.K. has started her attempt to set a new record for the furthest distance cycled in a year by a woman.
38 year-old Kajsa who lives in Nottingham, is intending to ride about 58,000km (36,000 miles).
The women’s record for the furthest distance cycled in a year was set 77 years ago. On January 1, 1938, a British lady named Billie Dovey (later married to take the name Fleming) set out to ride as far as she could in a year, in order to promote and inspire a healthy lifestyle for women.
She rode every day, on a 3-speed road bike, and achieved an astounding 29,603 miles, often finishing the day giving a talk on the health benefits of cycling.
Rather than raising money for charity, Kajsa’s mission is to get adults active and to feel good about themselves, in order to set a good example for the next generation.
She got her challenge off to a solid start yesterday as she clocked up 175 kilometres. You can follow Kajsa’s attempt here: http://www.ayearinthesaddle.com/
Jennifer Rabe you could take this on 🙂
She needs to cycle a minimum of 160Km everyday.
I bet her bike shop will love her.
That’s almost a century/day!
Puts my “high mileage” in perspective!
It does… But yours is way impressive!
She improves her chances with this year being a leap year. That doesn’t make up for all the bad biking days on UK though.
Julie Allman that’s one for you !!
How much do us men have to do? 160km aday. handy
