Irish rider Connor McConvey (An Post-Chain Reaction) put in a strong ride on today’s fourth stage of the Tour de Normandie (UCI 2.2) as he managed to get into the main break of the day with the intention of helping to preserve his team-mate Nicolas Vereecken’s lead in the red jersey competition.

McConvey’s original group of four were joined by three others after 100 kilometres of the 159-kilometre stage. However, his group were chased down by the bunch and inside the final few kilometres, a break of three riders got clear and they would contest the stage win.

Benoit Sinner (Equipe Cycliste Armée de Terre) was first across the line with the peloton just 5″ behind the three escapees. In the bunch finish, An Post riders Nicolas Vereecken and Jasper Bovenhuis sprinted to 6th and 7th places.

“It was a great effort from McConvey to be in the break, we lost the red jersey but you can see how much effort he put it today,” Directeur Sportif Kurt Bogaerts said afterwards. “Vereecken had another great sprint this time supported by Bovenhuis and I am sure we are on track for a top result very soon”
