A cyclist in Manchester escaped serious injury this week when she was hit by a van turning left in front of her. The incident was captured on dashcam footage by another motorist.

The cyclist can be seen proceeding along a cycle path when the van turns in front of her at a junction sending the unfortunate cyclist to the ground. The incident happened in Withington on Tuesday February 9.

The cyclist gets to her feet following the crash apparently unhurt, and the motorist who filmed the incident, Michael McDonald, gets out of his car to make sure she is OK.

“I couldn’t believe it when I saw what happened,” McDonald told the Manchester Evening News. “I thought the woman would be badly injured considering the force of the crash.

“But luckily just after she was back up and seemed OK. I rushed out to make sure, and she asked the van driver whether he could ‘get off her bike.”

“Whether he was indicating before he turned I really don’t know – but the woman was calm and they were polite with each other. She certainly didn’t seem to be blaming him.”

Police confirmed that they had recorded the incident and said no injuries were reported and that the matter was dealt with by the individuals involved exchanging details.

  1. Whao ! that could have bee much worse, hope the cyclist is OK. If there is a left turn here for motor vehicles then this junction is very poorly laid out for both cyclists and motorists.

  2. If you’ve ridden a bike in traffic for years then you know to anticipate this. He wasn’t indicating though so completely at fault and clearly didn’t check his mirror crossing a bike lane either. Unfortunately it’s this exact situation that so many fatalities occur from. If you commute in a city you unfortunately experience something like this pretty much on a daily basis.

  3. Van driver wasn’t indicating so most at fault. Cyclist should have been on the look-out for numpty maneuvers just like this. Comes with experience I guess.

  4. I agree Derbyshire , although the driver should have obviously indicated i personally would have been thinking its still a possibility that could have happened , after all we all account for such things when we are driving as just incase
