Austrian ultra-cyclist Christoph Strasser has set a new record for crossing Australia from Perth to Sydney. Strasser set a time of six days, 10 hours and 58 minutes for the 3,940-kilometre journey.

Strasser beat the previous record by the best part of a day. His compatriot Gerhard Gulewicz held the previous best time of seven days, 8 hours.

During the journey from Cottesloe Beach in Perth to the Sydney Opera House, Strasser faced extreme temperatures, strong winds and heavy rain. He managed to take less than six hours of sleep during the record attempt, only taking his first break after 36 hours. Strasser was supported by an eight-person team which included a doctor, team manager, and mechanic.

The Austrian is a three-time winner and record holder for the fastest time in the Race Across America (RAAM). In 2014, he completed the race in 7 days 15 hours 56 minutes.

He also encountered some Australian wildlife on his journey including this kangaroo, 2,600 kilometres into the journey.
