Race leader Chris Froome had a lucky escape on today’s stage of the Tour de France when he managed to stay upright after going off the road.

The incident happened as the bunch were chasing a breakaway on the eighth stage of the race from Dole to Station des Rousses.

Froome’s Team Sky were leading the peloton on a descent and as they rounded a bend, a number of riders went off the edge of the road onto the grass verge.

Fortunately though, both Froome and his team mates were able to stay upright. Lilian Calmejane (Direct Energie) went on to win the stage as Froome finished in the diminished bunch which contained all of the favourites. The group finished less than a minute down on the stage winner, with Froome retaining the yellow jersey.
