Chad Young is not expected to recover from injuries sustained in a crash at the Tour of the Gila on Sunday, according to a statement from his Axeon Hagens Berman team.

The 21-year-old from Newmarket, New Hampshire, suffered severe head injuries in the crash on a high-speed mountain descent 73 kilometres from the end of the 161.9-km final stage.

He was airlifted to a hospital in Tucson, Arizona where he was reported to have been in a stable condition. His team then announced on Tuesday that his condition was critical.

“There have been conflicting news reports concerning the condition of Axeon Hagens Berman Cycling Team rider Chad Young, who crashed Sunday in the Tour of the Gila,” the team said in the statement. “Unfortunately, Chad is not expected to recover from his injuries.

“At this time, his family asks for privacy. We at Axeon Hagens Berman respect the family’s wishes and want them to know that they are in our thoughts and prayers during this devastating and difficult time.”
