Bob Jungels (Etixx-Quick Step) attacked in the last three kilometres of the opening stage of the Tour of Oman yesterday to solo to the stage victory.

On the descent towards the finish, the Luxembourg champion managed to reach a top speed of 101.2 kilometres per hour as could be seen on his Strava statistics afterwards.

Jungels had apparently been planning the attack for a few days having recce’d the stage finish on a training ride.

“I told the mechanics to put a 55 tooth [chainring] in front because I planned this attack for two days, even longer,” he said after the finish.
