A cycling safety film from 1939 has recently been uploaded to YouTube entitled ‘Bicycling with Complete Safety.’

It’s an interesting look at how bike safety was taught nearly eighty years ago, with policemen leading young cyclists on a ride to show them how to cycle safely.

The film also features scenes such as one where an unlucky cyclist is hit by a car while cycling down the road eating popcorn.

“Riding down the street one day and I saw Willie Jones with a nice big box of popcorn. Willie could ride without even touching his handlebars, but he just couldn’t resist that last bite,” explains the narrator.

The narrator then goes on to explain that Willie could have had a safer ride if he had kept his hands on his bars.

The film also warns of other dangers to cyclists such as ignoring stop signs, hitting kerbs, riding on the pavement and horseplay.
