Viewers watching the Giro d’Italia yesterday may have noticed one of the riders crossing the finish line of the tenth stage time-trial with his skinsuit opened and a message written across his chest.
LottoNL-Jumbo rider Victor Campenaerts, who crossed the line in 182nd position over ten minutes behind stage winner Tom Dumoulin, had written “Carlien Daten?” on his chest which basically translates as “Carlien, will you go on a date with me?”
Unfortunately for Campanaerts, he has since been fined for what the organisers describe as “Behaviour of a rider which damages the image of cycling.” The Belgian rider received a fine of CHF100. The news was announced on the race jury’s communique.
The good news though is that Carlien agreed to go on a date with Victor. The pair have known each for a while according to Sporza. Campanaerts helped former triathlete Carlien with her swimming.
How’s that doing something like that “damages the image of cycling”? Dumbasses. Instead, he got attention for him and the Giro. If anything, Lotto Jumbo could be pissed at him for not showing their logo, but fining him…
£79 isn’t going to break the bank! And I would say Lotto Jumbo will be delighted at the coverage a rider who came 182nd is getting!!
Well worth the fine.
They fine this but doping is not dealt with…
Aww romance is not dead ☺️
Such a daft fine! It’s doping and
mechanically cheating that damage the image of cycling.Let the guy have a little romance in his TT!! ☺
James Holt Josh Granger hoooold up
Could be an expensive date
Does billing your uci fine to your date count as ‘going Dutch’?
well he was one of the favourites for the stage, shame if you put money on him to actually try and ride fast…
LOL! Good one
