Today’s stage of the Baloise Belgium Tour has been cancelled following a massive crash in the peloton with reports of two motorbikes having been involved in the collision.

Nineteen riders are reported as having been caught up in the crash with eleven riders taken to hospital. Following the decision to cancel the stage, the remainder of the peloton rode together to the finish line in Verviers.

The names of all eleven riders taken to hospital hasn’t been announced yet and the extent of their injuries is unknown. However, Lotto-Soudal have stated that one of their riders, Stig Broeckx was amongst those involved with the Belgian rider reported as having suffered a fractured skull.

The statement from Lotto-Soudal is: “#BelgiumTour @StigBroeckx will be transferred to the hospital in Aachen for tests. We’ll provide more info later.”

It’s unclear as to how exactly the crash took place but numerous reports on social media state that two motorbikes were involved and photos from the scene show a motorbike lying on the road at the scene,

Team Giant-Alpecin have also reported that their rider Fredrik Ludvigsson was involved as they tweeted: “#belgiumtour @Ludvigsson94 was involved in a crash. Looks like a shoulder injury. Now off to hospital for further check. Details to follow.”

Etixx-Quick Step, IAM Cycling, Trek-Segafredo and Bora-Argon 18 have all confirmed that none of their riders were involved.

This incident is the latest of a series of crashes involving support vehicles at races, including the tragedy at Ghent-Wevelgem in March when Antoine Demoitie died after a collision involving a race motorbike.
