French police have announced that the Belgian cyclist Antoine Demoitié has died after being struck by a motorbike at yesterday’s Gent-Wevelgem.

“The rider died. An inquiry is under way to determine the circumstances,” said Frederic Evrard, spokesman for the Nord-Pas-de-Calais regional gendarmerie in France.

The incident took place in Sainte-Marie-Cappel, northern France where Demoitié was one of a number of riders to crash and he was reported to have been subsequently hit by a motorbike.

The Wanty Groupe Gobert rider was transferred to the intensive care unit at the University Hospital of Lille. Yesterday evening his team provided the following update on his condition: “Antoine Demoitié’s situation remains very serious. His wife and family are with him at the hospital in Lille.”

Tragically though, the 25 year-old who had signed for the team at the end of last season was to succumb to his injuries late last night.
