Today’s second stage of the Tour of Slovenia (UCI 2.1) was marred by a number of crashes inside the closing stages of the race. Heavy rain on the streets of the capital Ljubljana resulted in a treacherous finish for the riders with a number of corners to negotiate near the finish.
Amongst those to fall were race leader Sam Bennett (Bora-hansgrohe), Mark Cavendish and his Team Dimension Data for Qhubeka team mate Kristian Sbaragli.
One rider who showed remarkable skill to stay upright was the Italian sprinter Andrea Palini (Androni Giocattoli). Palini could be seen bunny hopping some fallen riders and not only did he avoid crashing, he went on to finish sixth.
The 169.9km stage was won by Slovenian rider Luka Mezgec (ORICA-Scott) ahead of Roberto Ferrari (UAE Team Emirates) and Mark Renshaw (Dimension Data). Mezgec has also taken over the race lead.
