According to a report on www.cyclingpro.net, the twentieth stage of the Tour de France may need to be altered due to roadworks.

The stage is due to start in Modane and finish on Alpe d’Huez, taking in the Col du Télégraphe and the Col du Galibier along the way. However, emergency roadworks are taking place along the route in a tunnel on the Galibier.

The tunnel of Chambon was said to be in danger of collapse, and the roadworks mean that the road is currently closed and not expected to re-open until the 10th of July. This is two weeks before the stage is due to take place. Tour organisers are keeping abreast of the situation, but are not panicking. Thierry Gouvenou told ledauphiné.com. “We are still more than two months from the race and we’re not considering a plan B.”

The obvious option if the Col du Galibier is impassable is to access Bourg d’Oisans and therefore Alpe d’Huez via the Col de la Croix de Fer instead.

  1. Chambon Tunnel isn’t on the Galibier, it’s half way between La Grave and Bourg d’Oisans. The Galibier itself isn’t affected.
