Alex Dowsett (Movistar Team) will be released from hospital in London today after being admitted earlier this week to have his right-hand shoulder operated on.

The Essex-born rider sustained a broken collarbone in a crash in January 2015 forcing him to postpone his World Hour Record attempt. He eventually took on and broke the Hour Record on 2 May.

Dowsett required the operation due to potential problems that could have arisen from the metal plate that was inserted last year to fix his collarbone.

“The metal plate that was inserted to fix my broken collarbone started to show through the skin,” explains Dowsett. “Because of the risk of infection, this had to be removed as soon as possible. They cut me open, took out the plate and six screws and stitched me up.”

The four-time British TT champion will be back training next week but the incident will meant that he won’t line up at the start of the Giro d’Italia. The Briton had been part of Eusebio Unzué’s 11-rider shortlist.
