Alex Dowsett (Movistar) escaped serious injury at the Tour de Suisse today when he crashed at high speed on a corner during the prologue in Baar.

The British rider and former World Record holder later explained that he had clipped a pedal when rounding the corner which caused him to crash at the 4-kilometre mark.

Fabian Cancellara (Trek-Segafredo) was fastest in the 6.4-kilometre test, finishing just 1″ ahead of Jurgen Roelandts (Lotto Soudal) and a further second ahead of Luke Durbridge (Orica GreenEDGE).

Dowsett was forced to change bikes after the crash and went on to finish in 172nd position, 1’10” down on Cancellara.

He later tweeted: “In all seriousness, my fault, clipped a pedal mid corner. Would’ve been more of a crime if I hadn’t been pushing the limit. I’m ok, just skin.”
