Alejandro Valverde will be unable to line up at the start of Paris-Nice this Sunday, due to a virus, his Movistar team have announced.

Valverde has had a successful start to the season, having won the Vuelta Ciclista a la Region Murcia (1.1), and a stage and overall at the Vuelta a Andalucia Ruta Ciclista Del Sol (2.HC) and would have been looking to increase his tally of wins at the ‘Race to the Sun’.

Valverde will now be replaced by Víctor de la Parte, the Basque climber who will line up alongside Winner Anacona, Imanol Erviti, Jesús and José Herrada, Gorka Izagirre, Marc Soler and Rory Sutherland.

The next race scheduled for Valverde is the Volta Ciclista a Catalunya later in the month followed by the Gran Premio Miguel Indurain and the Vuelta al Pais Vasco.
