The Movistar Team have confirmed that Alejandro Valverde has extended his contract with the squad for an additional two seasons (2018 and 2019).

Valverde has raced with the team under its different guises since leaving Kelme at the end of the 2004 season. Since joining the team which was then known as Caisse d’Epargne, the Spaniard has won the Vuelta a Espana (2009) and the UCI Pro Tour/World Tour on four occasions.

His win in the Vuelta is his only Grand Tour victory, but he has come close to other wins having claimed eight other Grand Tour podium finishes, including 3rd in this year’s Giro d’Italia.

In addition, he has also taken numerous classic wins and shorter stage race wins. Amongst his classic wins are Liège–Bastogne–Liège three times (2006, 2008, 2015), La Flèche Wallonne four times (2006, 2014, 2015, 2016) and Clásica de San Sebastián twice (2008, 2014).

The rider from Las Lumbreras has won such stage races as Critérium du Dauphiné twice (2008, 2009), Volta a Catalunya (2009) and Vuelta a Andalucía four times (2012, 2013, 2014, 2016).

This extension to his contract will mean that Valverde will be 39 years-old when he’s racing the final year of his current contract and will have raced for 17 years in the professional peloton.
