Alberto Contador (Tinkoff) has pulled out of the Tour de France 84 kilometres into today’s stage to Andorra Arcalis after suffering with a fever overnight.

The Spaniard has been struggling since the opening day of the Tour after crashing on that first stage to Utah Beach. He slid out on a corner that day and suffered bad abrasions on his shoulder and arm.

Contador lost over 1’41” on yesterday’s stage to stage winner Chris Froome (Team Sky) and was sitting in 20th position overall, over three minutes behind race leader Froome.

The two-time winner of the Tour de France made an attempt to try and get into today’s break but was soon reeled in by the peloton. He then spent much of his time speaking to his directeur sportif behind the bunch.

His team announced that Contador “has sadly retired from the race after a fever this morning. It was a strong fight from Alberto. More to follow.”
