The opening stages of the Tour de France are usually nervous affairs and this year’s first stage is proving no different.
A big crash took place with 79 kilometres remaining of today’s stage and amongst those to go down were overall contender Alberto Contador (Tinkoff).
The Spaniard has suffered a number of abrasions and after regaining the peloton, has since received some treatment for his cuts from the race doctor. He appears to have escaped serious injury though.
The crash took place as the peloton negotiated a right-hand turn with a number of riders hitting a traffic island. Others who crashed included Team Sky’s Geraint Thomas and Luke Rowe and Marcus Burghardt (BMC Racing)

Ouch!
Shit!
Tough as nails!
Dino Lunardi
A bit tougher than his fellow countryman!
Put a steak on it…
Ouch! Tricky corner design for a bike race, though..
Missed the early crash but in the latter part of the stage that I did catch I saw a couple of corners that made me question who designed today’s route?!?
