Ahead of Alex Dowsett’s attempt on the World Hour Record today in Manchester, Chris Boardman talks at the launch of Aviva’s sponsorship of the Women’s Tour and Tour of Britain about the Hour Record and the attempt by Dowsett and the upcoming attempt by Bradley Wiggins.

Boardman first took the Hour Record in 1993, and he would go to set a distance of 56.375km in 1996. The rules for that record were subsequently changed, but Boardman ended his career in 2000 with the “Athlete’s Hour”, set using equipment similar to that used by Eddy Merckx in 1972.

Dowsett will attempt to beat the distance set by the Australian Rohan Dennis, who holds the record of 52.491 kilometres. He had improved on the previous records of Matthias Brandle and Jens Voigt. Wiggins is set to make his attempt on 7 June at the London Olympic velodrome.
