A video has been produced featuring a number of top cyclists, which hammers home the message to fans to exercise caution when spectating at races. The video features amongst others, Vincenzo Nibali, John Degenkolb, Tejay van Garderen, Nairo Quintana, Alberto Contador and Tom Boonen.

The number of incidents occuring at top level races seems to be increasing year-on-year with a small minority of over-exuberant fans potentially causing problems for cyclists.

Recently, there have been a number of high-profile incidents at the Giro d’Italia. On Stage 2, a cyclist on a fixie cycled from the pavement into the speeding peloton. Also, on Stage 6, Nippo Vini Fantini cyclist Daniele Colli’s race ended when he crashed during the sprint finish. It emerged that he had caught his arm in a spectator’s camera strap.

The message in the video is one that’s worth spreading and hopefully will help to reduce the number of incidents involving spectators.
