’48 Hairpin Bends by Night’ is the story of Giuliano Calore and one of his final attempts to become part of the history of cycling.

The Italian – who we posted an article about earlier this year – decided to take on the tricky descent of the Passo Stelvio with its 48 hairpin bends, on a bike with no handlebars or brakes and with illumination provided by just a torch and moonlight.

Giuliano Calore, born in Padova (north-east Italy) in 1938, is a living legend of extreme cycling. Some of his extraordinary exploits are now to be found in the Guinness Book of World Records, and this led him to receive the coveted honour of King of Records in his field.

In 1981 for example, he cycled up and down the Stelvio Pass playing 4 musical instruments, carrying a total weight of 33kgs. In 1983, he crossed 14 Dolomite passes in 13 hours.

The following year, he cycled up the Stelvio using only his right leg in a time of 1 hour and 36 minutes. In 1985, he descended the Stelvio in a record time of 27 minutes and 1 second. Four years later, he set a record time for climbing the Stelvio, beating Bernard Hinault’s time by four minutes.

Giuliano, who is now 77 years old, has decided that he wants to achieve one last record: he wants to navigate the twists and turns of the legendary Monte Stelvio Pass, the scenic location of some of his previous astounding demonstrations of equilibrium, tenacity and inexhaustible strength, and also where some of the most famous moments in the history of cycling have taken place.

This is his most impressive challenge so far: descending from the Stelvio Pass – at an altitude of 2758 m – at night, with all of its 48 hairpin turns, on a bike with no handlebars or brakes, illuminated only by a torch and moonlight.

“48 Tornanti di Notte” tells the incredible story of this extraordinary character, with a boundless passion for cycling and a free, unconventional lifestyle.

The film of his attempt will be available in HD Streaming (with English/German subtitles) from December 1st, while the DVD will be shipped from December 13.
