1986 World Champion Moreno Argentin has been sentenced to one year in prison after being found guilty of fraud according to a report in La Gazzetta dello Sport.

Argentin had been charged alongside 39 year-old estate agent Mauro Termici with receiving payments totaling €310,000 between 2010 and 2011 from a couple for purchasing a property in a project called Viva Domus in Fossalta di Portogruaro in the province of Venice, Veneto, Italy.

However, the couple found they were unable to close the deal when they learnt that the property was already mortgaged by a company called the Cassa di Risparmio di Venezia.

Negotiations had initially begun between the couple and Termici and then continued with Argentin, whose reputation was said to have provided the buyers with reassurance.

A year after the purchase, the company were declared bankrupt and the couple were forced to re-buy their apartment spending another €280,000.

Argentin won his World title in 1986 in Colorado Springs. He also won numerous classics such as Liège–Bastogne–Liège (1985, 1986, 1987, 1991), Giro di Lombardia (1987), the Tour of Flanders (1990) and La Flèche Wallonne (1990, 1991, 1994). In addition, he also won the Italian Road Race Championships twice (1983, 1989).
